Ubisoft bringing a New Splinter Cell in March – Video Games Update
An Amazon UK listing has revealed that the latest installment in the Splinter Cell series, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, will be hitting the shelves on March 29, 2013.
Splinter Cell is a stealth action series published by Ubisoft. The first game title simply Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell came out in 2002 for the PC, Playstation 2 and the original Xbox. Ever since then the series has developed a hardcore fan-base and has sold
more than 22 million units worldwide.
The fifth game and the latest game released in the series, Splinter Cell: Conviction, which came out in 2010 was exclusive to Microsoft’s Windows OS and the Xbox 360. Playstation fans were disappointed when they heard the news that the fifth installment
in the series will be skipping their platform of choice.
The game got mixed reviews and alienated many hardcore fans when the series took a turn from being stealth to being more action oriented. Splinter Cell fans all around the world complained that the game had lost its ‘soul’ and was catering to the Call of
Duty crowd.
Another reason for fan disappointment was that the single player campaign was really short and could be completed in almost 5 hours. Though there was also a co-op multiplayer campaign present in the game where players could either play split-screen locally
or play with someone online. However, fans complained that the second campaign did not make up for the decision to cut back the “Spies vs. Mercenaries” mode which was really popular in the third installment of the series, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
Ubisoft announced the sixth installment at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and Blacklist is set for a multiplatform release which will include the Playstation 3. Fans were disappointed with the game-play demo showed at the show which showed
the series’ protagonist Sam Fisher undercover in Afghanistan cracking down on terrorist cells.
Fans complained that it looked heavily inspired by military shooters, namely Call of Duty and the demo featured a day time level as it did not show Sam using his signature night-vision goggles. Apart from that the game-play looked much similar to that of
Conviction.
Ubisoft has stated that they have been listening to the fan feedback and most of what fans love will be returning to the game.
