Ubisoft making Far Cry 3 ten times as big as the first two titles
If gamers were impressed by the scale of the first two games in the Far Cry series, then the announcement that Far Cry 3’s scale will be ten times as large as the first two games, will surely raise a few eyebrows.
Jason Vandenberghe, the narrative director behind the third instalment in the Far Cry series, tried to explain the scale in simple mathematical terms.
“If you look at the vistas and the scale of Far Cry 1 and 2, take that and multiply it by ten. We want to take that even further. We’re focusing on taking that scale and making it dense, so that around every corner there’s something to find or see,” Vandenberghe
said.
So from that statement it seems that Far Cry 3’s scale is set to be similar to that of a small state, or province. Yet at the same time, fans will have been relieved to hear the effort the developers are putting into the environments, as creating maps on
such a large scale could result in areas with nothing in them.
Environments in games are not made by the scale, but rather the richness and depth in it. Luckily for gamers, Vandenberghe and the team at Ubisoft seem to understand that.
Vandenberghe also elaborated on the issue himself, giving his own take on how environments affect the game and how Far Cry will attempt to differentiate itself from the pack.
“That’s a key in open-world experiences. We ask ourselves: if there wasn’t anyone to shoot in the game, could it still be fun? I want to present the player with intense situations, and then I don’t even want to watch what you do. That’s not the designer’s
business,” he added.
So from that, one can deduce that Ubisoft want to make a rich, immersive environment, where players will always have something to distract them. So far, it seems that the development team seem to have Far Cry 3 perfect in terms of concept, but whether or
not it will live up to its promises remains to be seen.
