Ubisoft plans to release open-world games on regular basis - Gaming News
Ubisoft has revealed that it will be releasing open-world games on a regular basis in the future, something that it is very much capable of doing because of the technology at its disposal and the collaboration between its studios.
Speaking during a post-earning financial call, the publisher’s CEO Yves Guillemot said that in order to broaden its market and engage the players even further, the company will focus on shipping open-world games more frequently.
According to him, various game genres have evolved over the years due to open-world games, citing the Assassin’s Creed franchise as an example for the evolution of adventure, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) for the evolution of action,
Skyrim for the evolution of role-playing games (RPG) and Far Cry 3 for the first-person shooters (FPS).
"We need to release open-world [games] on a regular basis. Open-world has proved to be the clear direction where game genres evolve," Guillemot said. "It began with GTA for the action segment, then it happened to adventure with
Assassin's Creed; to the RPG with Skyrim and last year was its first major entry into FPS with Far Cry 3. The Crew showed at E3 that it can also be a big differentiator for the driving segment and excitement around The Division confirms how relevant it is
to RPG games."
The Ubisoft executive further pointed out that the company had shown an unmatched performance by releasing nine open-world titles in the last seven years.
He gave credit for what he described as a unique capacity to the strong collaboration between studios.
In order to get players more involved in video games, Guillemot stated that each new title released by the company will need to have five “online and social breakthroughs,” which include co-op and social, systematic gameplay, user-generated
content, low barriers to entry and the delivery of a personalised experience through analytics.
By ensuring the integration of all five breakthroughs in a game, the executive believes that players will spend a greater amount of time playing the game.
Ubisoft will be releasing its latest title Watch Dogs for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC on November 19. The game will also be releasing on Sony’s and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles sometime during the holiday
season.
