Udon Thani Travel Tips?

Question

What to do in Udon Thani and nearby ? Tours to Take? Bars to go to? Where to eat? Where to shop? Other fun activities? Anything else helpful to know about being there ?

I have never been to Udon Thani before. I'll be staying there for a week next month. My hotel and flight are already booked.

You should spend at least 2 days in Nong Khai. Its a 9 baht train ride fnorth of Udon Thani and I love the place. Its on the Mekong River so you can do the river trips and have a meal aboard. Also there is a statue garden nearby to NK - a tuk tuk ride away called Sala Kaew Ku. Its a must see. As Udon is off the mainstream tourist trail the cost of living is lower and you can get buffet meals for 99baht and cook them at your table with a charcoal barbie cut  in the middle of the table.

You may consider investing in the back-packers bible - "lonely planet Thailand" Its a very good guide book with maps and telephone numbers. There is also a good night market near the train station in Udon and most of the bars are located around this down-town area, as well as Robinsons ( shopping mall ) Enjoy!!  Im going myself before Christmas

Although there is little attraction to see in the city for most travellers, there are a few quite interesting temples.  There are a lot of bars because of the number of former military who live in the area.  Thailand's premier Bronze Age excavation at Ban Chiang, the world-renowned archaeological site is about 30 miles away and might be interesting for some.
