Uganda International Badminton Championships: Willem Viljoen and Annari Viljoen steal the show
South Africa’s Willem Viljoen and Annari Viljoen delivered a stunning performance and grabbed the Mixed Doubles title after defeating their higher ranked team-mates, Dorian Lance James and Michelle Claire Edwards, in the title match of Uganda International
Badminton Championships 2012 on Sunday, February 5, in Uganda.
The un-seeded couple of Willem and Annari stole the show by thrashing the top seeds, Dorian and Michelle, in a phenomenal fashion.
They took just 20 minutes to crush their opponents in straight games and claimed the title.
Dorian and Michelle could not have expected for more severe treatment from their lower ranked challengers as they could not live up to the expectations and lost both games without putting up considerable resistance.
Willem and Annari were in smashing form on the final day of Uganda International as they played with superb confidence and proved that they have what it takes to become world beaters.
The lower ranked Willem and Annari started the first set with an aggressive approach as they played fast badminton at the net and also remained dominant from the rear-court area.
The sharp reflexes of the lower ranked couple did not spare any room for the top seeded Dorian and Michelle to place their strokes and earn points.
The major difference between both couples was the aggression as Willem and Annari did not slow down the pace of rallies at any moment and remained successful in taking a superb lead until the break.
After the break, Willem and Annari continued their killing performance against the top seeded opponents and won the first set with a sensational 21-7 score on the board.
In the second game, Dorian and Michelle played fast game in the opening rallies but could not impress the crowd as they committed many unforced errors by hitting the bird in the net or wide of the court.
On the other hand, Willem and Annari were quite composed in the game as they did not make any mistake in the entire set and finished it in an emphatic fashion with a remarkable difference of 21-10.
Willem and Annari ended this Mixed Doubles contest in just 20 minutes with a stunning 21-7 and 21-10 score on the board.
