Uganda names beach volleyball teams for Olympic Qualifiers in Kenya
The Uganda Volleyball Federation announced four teams, which will represent the country at the upcoming CAVB (Confederation Africane de Volleyball) Zonal-phase beach volleyball tournament in Kenya. Two pair have been selected in each gender category. The
Ugandan tandems will play in Pool D.
Names of the selected players are as followed:
Women’s duos
Vivvienne Aketch – Sharon Pajije Andrina Namata – Mercy Tabitha
Men’s pairs
Isaac Omedo – Amon Ainebyona Dickens Otim – Ambrose Okello
A total of eight women’s teams underwent a training and selection process. After careful analysis and evaluation of players’ performance, only four could get lucky to be chosen for Olympic Qualifying tournament. Quite similarly, the men’s duos were shortlisted
after a tough assessment. The Volleyball Federation of Uganda held the training and selection camp at Lido Beach for the last whole month. Same Meya led the technical team and he will be further attached with team through the tournament.
The Olympic qualifying process for African teams has already been started. A total of 35 countries are supposed to compete for the empty slot in 2012 London Olympic Games. Each country is allowed to send two teams (one team per gender) in the competition.
The participating countries have been divided into five major groups, which are further subdivided into 10 sub-zonal groups. According to the set formula of CAVB, successful teams of the sub-zonal phase will advance to the Zonal phase.
The sub-zonal phase will feature nine tournaments and teams with better rankings will play in the zonal stage, which will feature five tournaments. In the end, only eight countries will remain on the grid to fight for the final spots. Currently, two of the
sub-zonal tournament in Pool A and Pool E covered their length. Pool A tournament was hosted by Sierra Leone, while Mozambique hosted the matches of Pool E and both tournaments spanned over three days.
Following the same formula, Pool D, which includes Uganda, qualifying tournaments will be held in Mombasa, Kenya from July 27-29. Teams from Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Djibouti, Comoros, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania
and Burundi will be on board to contest their beach volleyball skills.
