Uganda to be presented by a squad of 13 athletes in Daegu - IAAF World Championships in Athletics
With the IAAF World Athletics Championships kicking-off from next Saturday, on August 27, the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has announced the names of 13 athletes that will be representing the country at the mega athletics event in Daegu, the third largest
city of South Korea.
Uganda, just like the other African countries, specialises in running events, and thus, the contingent being sent by the country to South Korea is mainly comprised of middle and long distance runners for both Men’s and Women’s events.
The 13-member squad will be lead by formidable long distance runner, Moses Kipsiro, the 24-year-old athlete who had ended the 2007 World Championships with a bronze medal in the 5000m contest. While appearing at the Daegu event, the cherished runner from
Uganda will contest for two events – the 5000m run and the 10,000m grapple.
Kipsiro, while representing his homeland at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the 5000m, the distance he specialises in, had finished for a fourth position. However, his performance at the African Championships in Athletics and All Africa Games has been tremendous,
which observed him bagging a number of medals out of the both of the events.
Running at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where the athlete had participated in both the 5000m and 10,000m events, he finished the event with prominent positions. While running at national level events, he bagged the Ugandan Cross Country Championships for
a staggering four times. He has maintained his winning streak for the event since 2008. Moreover, the strenuous runner also holds national records in the 3000m, 5000m and 10,000 running events.
The Ugandan group leaving for Daegu is comprised of the following athletes in both the Men’s and Women’s categories: Moses Kipsiro, Benjamin Kiplagat, Julius Mutekanga, Jacob Araptany, Geoffrey Kusuro, Abraham Kiplimo, Richard Soibi, Stephen Kiprotich, Nicholas
Kiprono and Daniel Chepyegon. The last four of these athletes will represent the country in Marathon competitions.
The women runners, though a very small contingent (three members), will include Annet Negesa, Sarah Nambawa and Jane Suuto. While Negesa specialises in the 800m competition, Nambawa will represent the country in long jump and Suuto will mark her presence
in the Marathon competitions.
