Ugo Monye happy with victory – Rugby News Update
Ugo Monye, the 29-year-old England Harlequins' winger, is ecstatic after his side won the final of the Aviva Premiership against the Leicester Tigers.
The Leicester Tigers are the ‘ultimate champions’ of England, having played in eight straight finals, and possessing the pedigree of delivering at crucial stages. However, the Quins were able achieve victory and claim their first Premiership title under
the tutelage of Conor O’Shea.
Monye, who has been recalled into the England squad by Stuart Lancaster, the head coach of England, for the summer tour of South Africa, where his country plays the Springboks in a three-match Test series along with playing two other mid-week games during
the tour of the southern hemisphere, praised O’Shea for the culture he has instilled at the Quins.
He said, "The biggest change at Harlequins has been the culture that Conor has influenced. He knows how to get the very best out of young talent. He has developed and matured us, and massive credit goes to him."
The Harlequins had to deal with the unfortunate bloodgate saga three years ago, when Dean Richards, their former head coach, used fake blood to enforce a substitution in a Heineken Cup game. It was a dark time for the club, but O’Shea has instilled belief
in the team.
Monye was commenting after the victory, that the Quins can write a new chapter at the Stoop.
"This is another chapter in this new era of rugby at Harlequins," Monye said. "We have got a lot of experience. We've beaten Toulouse away, we beat Munster away last season, Stade Francais in the Amlin Challenge Cup final and Leicester away this year."
The winger wanted to test himself against Leicester in the final, and tries from captain Chris Robshaw and Tom Williams helped secure a 30-23 victory for the club, who were tagged as the underdogs for the final.
Monye has played 15 times for England, starting all of those games. He made his debut against the Pacific Islanders at Twickenham, on November 8, 2008. He will be looking forward to reinvigorating his England career having not featured for the national side
since March 2010.
