  1. Sigh...

Depends on what you mean by "vampires."  There are people who genuinely identify with the archetype of the vampire and base some of their personal behaviours and beliefs on the vampire image.  Most of the time these people do NOT drink blood.  Many of them are attracted to the idea of the "shadow side" of reality and human nature, and they often discuss things like energy and life-force instead of "the blood is the life."  They tend to be accomplished energy workers.  In my experience, a good deal of the people in this group tend to be really serious and thoughtful about the subject of vampires and why they identify with that image.

There is a whole segment of the gothic sub-culture that is interested in vampires.  Most of the time these people are essentially playing dress-up, or just love the aesthetics of the modern vampire image.  Sometimes this group intersects with the previous one, but not always.

There are also some people who really drink blood.  People have a variety of reasons for doing this.  Some say it is a spiritual or religious practice (I've got my own thoughts on this one, but I'll leave that alone...I personally don't support it under any circumstances.)  For others, it's a fetish.  Some people who drink blood have just read Anne Rice or Poppy Z. Brite too many times and are taking it too seriously.  Of course, many people who drink blood are seriously mentally ill.

On that note, there certainly are people out there who are delusional and have latched onto the vampire as a focus for their insanity.  It's not really any different from those who believe they are Cleopatra or Napolean.  As well, many criminals such as Jefferey Dahmer have either been called vampires or even called themselves vampires.

If you are really interested, A&E has done a documentary about "real-life" vampires that they usually air around Halloween (check their website).  The book "Piercing the Darkness" by Katherine Ramsland is helpful as well.  I would NOT recommend most of the sites that pop up on a Google search.  Konstantinos' "Vampires: the Occult Truth" takes a more "neo-pagan" approach to the subject.

Of course, in some sense, aren't we ALL vampires, as we all survive off the life-energy of other living things....?

    Hope this helps,
