  1. We have candy cane in France, it is called "sucre d'orge".The recipe for French "sucre d'orge" was created in 1638 in Moret-sur-Loing (east of Paris) by a benedictine nun called sister Elizabeth Pidoux. It was created for a medicinal purpose, to soothe the throat and provide energy for pilgrims. Other recipes for candy sticks were probably created elsewhere in Europe around the same time.

The shape was straight then and in France it is still usually straight. Its present shape (and color) meant to ressemble Saint Nicolas's crook was created in the US at the end of the 19th century, probably around the same time as the character of Santa Claus.

It is not widely used as a Christmas decoration in France as it is in England and the US though, this is a recent (late 19th) Anglo-American tradition. In France it is just a normal candy, not associated with any particular holiday and it is not as popular as it is in America.
