  1. yes, you can only work for  one out of the two years of the Visa

i'm not sure about when the Visa will kick in, but with a lot of Visa's they are valid to a certain date after you apply for them

as far as Scotland being better than England, there is no definite answer, some parts of Scotland are better than England, and some parts of England are better than Scotland

  2. You can work for upto 1 year but your visa is valid for 2:

    http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/...

Your visa is valid from when you specify it to be valid....when you complete the application for visa it will ask if there is a date you would like it begin (there are restrictions such as must be within the next 6mths or something). You wont be able to enter the UK until your 'visa date'.

I haven't made it to Scotland yet!!

  3. You can work the equivalent of one year full time - meaning you can work for two years if you are only working half time.

The visa will be valid from when you are given it, but they will ask you on your application when you want it to start - so if you are applying a month before you plan to head over, they will date the visa to not be valid until that date.  Once entered, it can't change, so make sure you know when you plan to go.

The UK visas website is very thorough and will give you all of the details about restrictions, etc.

As for England or Scotland, they each have their own advantages depending on what you are looking for.  In terms of finding work, you are best of in a large city (London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinborough, etc).  Start looking on job sites and see what types of work are available and what the average rates of pay are in the cities you are interested in and you may want to look into what accommodation costs will be like as well.

    Have fun!
