Ukraine and Russia capture 4*100m freestyle gold medal - 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championships
Freestyle Relay teams of Ukraine and Russia captured the gold medals of the Women’s and Men’s 4*100m freestyle relay meets respectively, on the third day of the 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championships on Tuesday, August 9, in Coimbra, Portugal.
These third World Deaf Championships are being organised by the international aquatic sport’s governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Ukraine won the title of 100m freestyle relay, by posting a new Deaf Championship Record time of 4 minutes and 01.90 seconds. The squad’s time was significantly under the former championship record of 4 minutes and 04.72 seconds, held by Russian team from
2007, while they were 1.56 seconds slower than the Deaf World Record of 3 minutes and 59.34 seconds, set by Ukrainian team in 2009.
Belarus acquired the silver medal of the event, as they were 2.03 seconds away from the gold medallist and posted a time of 4 minutes and 03.93 seconds. Similarly, the Russian relay team remained 1.60 seconds slower than their former finisher and submitted
a third fastest effort of 4 minutes and 05.53 seconds for bronze medal.
United States and Great Britain emerged as the fourth and fifth position holders of the event, as they ended their swims in 4:06.30 and 4:17.20 minutes, respectively.
In the Men’s corner, Russia took the lead over their following competitors to lower the Deaf Championships record, by producing a time of 3 minutes and 32.91 seconds. They were nearly eight seconds under the former championships mark of 3 minutes and 40.86
seconds, set by Ukraine in 2006, while they missed their own Deaf World Record of the event at 3 minutes and 32.52 seconds, by just 0.39 seconds.
They were trailed by Ukraine and United States, which concluded their swims in second and third places, with timings of 3:36.33 and 3:40.27 minutes, respectively. Great Britain and Chinese Taipei were the fourth and fifth fastest finishers, as they clocked
timings of 3:44.67 and 4:01.32 minutes, respectively.
The session ended after the breath-taking efforts of all participants, while the frontrunners collected their accolades after the session.
