Question:

Umbilical stump not falling off?

My foal is 3 weeks old, and still has his umbilical stump. It doesn't appear to be infected or have a hernia, and it is not leaking urine. It's not really hard or dried up either. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do about it. (I'll phone the vet this week and ask them too).

  1. If it is too long, the vet can band it with a rubber band, but let him do it.

I prefer to let them check it out first, just in case!

  2. Treat it with iodine. Fill up a little cup with it and submerge the cord in it once daily. This will at least keep it clean and may make it dry up and fall off. Best bet is talking with your vet, but this will be good in the meantime. I have never seen this myself and have seen lots of foals, kittens, puppies who are newly born. The stump tends to dry by itself right away. That this one isn't is a concern as the possibilty of infection is going to be pretty high with serious consequences for the foal. When the vet does come out, I'd be interested in knowing what the outcome is.

  3. JUST CALL THE VET YEA! I'M SURE HE'LL BE FINE HE MIGHT JUST BE LATE A DEVOLOPING.

  4. Call the vet, I wouldnt rely on ppl on here half of them know absoultly nothing
