Umbrella.. is for hot sun or rain ?

Actually, the umbrella is mostly used at the initial stage to save us from the hot sun. similarly, they used only oiled cloth only and then only modernised. Step by step in the 16th century, they began to use for rain too. am i correct ?

i believe it can be used for both. because where i live in Jamaica it is really hot sometimes. we tend to use our umbrellas to block us from the heat. and it also can be used for rain , but sometimes it hardly helps because your feet are always getting wet and even our pants or skirts.
