1. Can you smoke it?

2. Is it banned in Canada or can I go to a health store and buy it? (Or do you need a prescription or something?)

Thanks :)

  1. Legal in U.S. and Canada to my knowledge. Heat destroys the active constituents dramatically reducing the potency so don't decoct or infuse it like regular teas, a cold infusion can be prepared by soaking dry root in water 30 min-1 hr, and wringing out, i.e. with old sock. Website below is an excellent source of info and supplies excellent root, particularly their most potent "Chief's Jungle Kava"  (requires a strong stomach, effects similar to alcohol for hours) Never heard of smoking it, certainly not a traditional method.

  2. One "can" smoke any dried herb. However, that is not how Kava is used. Traditionally (and the most potent extraction) is to chew the root and spit it into a cup, add boiling water and simmer for 1/2 hour, then strain and drink. The digestive enzymes in your saliva help extract the medicinal, calming properties of the herb.

To the best of my knowledge, Kava is not banned anywhere. It is perfectly safe to boil to make tea or extract in alcohol. In the US it is available at health food stores. Also can be purchased online in bulk.
