Umph expected to strike a second time at Kempton through the Mascot Grand National 07.05.12 Handicap
The Class 6 Mascot Grand National 07.05.12 Handicap will get staged at Kempton over seven furlongs on Tuesday, 1st May. The line-up of the race comprises of fourteen horses.
All the candidates for the race are fairly experienced at Kempton but there is only one entry who has won there and that too during the new season.
Umph, Kodiac’s three-year-old bay gelding out of mare, Baraloti, has been active eight times during the new season, two of which were at Kempton and the only victory that he posted was during the second time that he raced at Kempton.
He strode into the new season on 21st January in the 5th “Sharen Blaquiere – Celebrate A Life” Selling Stakes at Lingfield over six furlongs. The race was won by the 11/10 favourite, Chapellerie, who was paired with Shane Kelly and
led the runner up, The Dancing Lord, by 1 ¾ lengths.
Ending fifth on the line-up of eight was Umph riding with Jimmy Fortune.
His first attempt at Kempton was on 1st March in the £32 Free At 32Red.Com Handicap over a mile. This time Umph parked sixth on the field of twelve behind the winner, Beauchamp Castle.
Joining the winner on the other end of the wire were Tectonic and Masters Blazing.
The second chance of racing at Kempton came on 28th March in the Amigo Handicap over seven furlongs. Umph led the field of eleven by four and a half lengths and was coupled up with jockey Cathy Gannon for the race.
Finishing the closest to the winner was Parque Atlantico and settling third was the 7/2 joint favourite of the race, Auntie Kathryn. The other joint favourite, True Prince, ended tenth.
Today will be his third try of the season at Kempton and otherwise ninth outing of 2012.
The potential threats for Umph are Illustrious Lad, Arabian Flight and Tectonic as all of them got placed in the races that they took part in at Kempton. Umph has raced with a few before and thus knows the tactics of keeping them out of the way when striving
for the wire.
