Un-social Sorrel Gelding/F, just a 'Pasture pet' or can she be worked with?

We may be getting a horse that some folks dont have room for anymore. One of them is not so bad but theres a young gelding, female and they say she's skittish/doesnt like people, will only be good as a pasture pet. Is there any way to work with her and make her social or even maybe oneday on a hope and a prayer rideable? We have horse runs and a corral. I'm just learning about horses and not real sure what can be done... Help?

  1. I think that this horse will be great for you to start with.

    MANY PEOPLE WILL DISAGREE.

but this horse is most definitly going to be social.

spend a lot of time doing ground work such

as lunging leading brushing walking over objects.

    gain her trust.

this horse will not only teach you how to

be a good rider but how to be patient.

please dont give up on her.

as you spend more time with the horse

you will learn how to handle it and  get better.

just make sher that ur the boss of her.

    i am 13 y/o and i started ryding

and i learned how to ryde on

an untrained unbroke 2 year old.

and now we are best friends

and i have come to train and break others.

i am now a very talented rider.

    several ppl will tell you

o get a calm older trained horse

but you wont learn anything about riding a horse

on a "push botton" or "easy horse.".

((i have trained 3 horses tht went on

to compete and won! my sister has done the same and i

have never rode a push button or easy horse.

  2. Yeah they can be socialised. Ive had two like that, one who was bought out of the hills and with a week of seeing people, was sold to us. She turned out to be the best and would follow around like a dog.

Second one had been severly abused by her previous owners. I worked with her constantly and now shes like a dog!! True best friend.

    Both can now be ridden.

But it doesnt matter if you have corrals and runs, its your attitude. And it is not a beginner task by any means. Youve got to have patience and know what your sending to the horse and its comfortable spots etc

    And it can be dangerous!!

  3. Of course she can be socialized and most likely taught to ride. BUT IT WILL NOT BE A JOB FOR A BEGINER.

Don't get me wrong but usually when a horse is described as unsocialized it translates into wild as a march hare. These horses are afraid of people, just like any other animal, and a horse in fear mode will hurt you. Maybe not even intentionaly but won't matter in the end.

If you want to help her. Hire a good trainer to come out to your farm to work with her. Tell them you want to help and be there yourself. It will be a good learning experience for you but not for you to attempt alone.

Also....how is this a gelding if it is female? A gelding is a "neutered" male. A mare is a female.

  4. No offense but if you are saying Geling female I think you need a horse that is bombproof and have a trainer. That is the beginning of horsemanship.. Or you are just missing words in your typing. Please fix this so we know how to help you and we give the type of response you are looking for..
