Unable to access dial-up even though line is o.k. and provider says all is o.k.?

I have dial-up email and internet access via a small, local ISP. I have been not been able to send or receive email or access the internet from my home computer for about a week. The error messages I get say “command error: ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: cannot connect to the mailserver” and that the network timed out. When I try to check email, it ays “Checking email”, then it says, “No other messages” even though there are many. It also displays the server name I’m connected to and the send and receive speeds.

I can access email via web mail from any other computer. I am able to make and receive phone calls as well as send and receive faxes from that phone line. I have contacted my ISP. He said that everything “looks normal” from his end and that something must be wrong with my phone line or computer (hardware? software? Settings?) What should I do?

  1. Your going to need a cellphone for this.  Call your ISP with the cellphone and then explain the problem again.  Dial out to the provider and let him run a "ping" test to your system.  This will verify connectivity.  Do the same from your end.  Once you have ruled out the line then look at the software installed for dial up.  Check the setting against what is suppose to list for your modem.  The ISP should have done these layer one test to get you back online.  Once you can surf the net then check your setting for your email account.  Verify with the company that this is also set up right.

  2. do you have a firewall on your PC?  maybe it's blocking your connection?  if you can make calls and fax it's not the phone lines.  the same wires are used.  if it was a DSL connection then maybe the pairs used by DSL are bad, but with dial up that's not an issue.  contact your ISP...with a brick in hand...

  3. Since your other computer works, it's not the ISP.  Drop the brick before someone gets hurt.

It sounds like the modem or the cable to the wall socket is bad.

I bet you've got a few dozen of these cables laying around - just change it and see what happens.

Modems are cheap, less than $20, and easy to replace.

  4. AVG POP3 Proxy Server: that looks like your AVG is blocking access you need to go into options and reset them or uninstall AVG and reinstall it some how it might have been corrupted

  5. Read through the info on this page it may apply to you.
