Question:

Unable to boot Windows XP?

I have a dell with XP. I recently got the antivirus xp 2008 virus which I was able to remove, but I am still unable to boot up my PC. It freezes up at some point between the user login screen and when the desktop loads, making it unusable. No buttons will work, nor will the mouse or ctrl alt dlt.

I tried to use system restore, but I have no restore points! It says I should have them, but I don't. Is my only option to use Dell PC Restore and restore to factory settings? I will lose everything (most of my data is backed up) but the computer is 3 years old and in that time I made a LOT of updates to drivers and software, that I can't afford to replace.

Please help me

  1. I'm sorry, but that looks like your only option... Try posting help on a tech support forum.. Be patient, and they will answer... Other whys, I would take it to a repair shop... Good Luck

Additional Detail Update: If you can boot into safe mode, this means that it is most likely malware or malware damage... Make sure you've cleaned your PC fully...

Booting into safe mode stops unnecessary programs from running. So your malware isn't loading and causing errors.

  2. Happend to me also with antivirus xp 2008. I found a removal process that had me boot into safe mode and then run a free program that cleans out the antivirus xp 2008 files. Now after rebooting my system came up and i do not get the popups like i use too.

    It was http://www.pchubs.com/blogs/antivirusxp-...

  3. Kaspersky Lab has a very nice online virus scanner, I'd try that again. http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

    before that install "Spyware Blaster"

and "Spybot Search & Destroy" (http://www.safer-networking.org)

Maybe your problem will be fixed with them

If that doesn't help, try Hirens Boot CD (Google for it). Or get a Windows Live CD from somewhere, so windows will boot directly from the CD and you can save all your data etc.

  4. Pop in your Windows XP disc and open a command prompt.

    Type this in:

    format C:/

This will erase everything on your computer, EVERYTHING.

I recommend making a backup before you reformat your HDD.

  5. boot into safe mode and go to start run, type msconfig.  In the start up tab uncheck  everything.  Boot your machine into normal mode, if it boots then, then check one of them at a time until you experience the problem again.  The last thing you checked probably caused the problem.

  6. Your computer is still infected with virus please run a full scan of virus by running the computer in the safe mode by using a good antispyware like "spybot", "ccleaner" etc. and removed each and every viruses found. Then try to boot your computer again. If it is not working then you need to format the OS partition and reinstall the OS. Best of Luck!

  7. yes, reimage of machine seems the only option. I know of no quick fixes to resolve issue. good luck with everything.
