Unable to view pictures/graphics on SOME webpages

Question

On SOME web pages and received emails I get a box with a red cross in the corner instead of an image. Right clicking and selecting "show image" does nothing. I've checked that Play Animation, Play Sound, Play videos, Show pictures., are all ticked in Internet options. Any suggestions how to fix this please? I'm running windows XP.

first try emptying old browser cache and cookies for any files that may cause conflict,

verify that flash and java are working and updated,

if icons appear with rip or broken, then image is no longer in directory location, or moved,
