Question:

Unarmed Campus Security Wearing Body Armor?

Does anybody know of any unarmed campus security departments that wear body armor though they don't carry guns?

I know Loyola U in Chicago does. Does anybody else?

Where I work we carry batons, OC and handcuffs but are thinking about incorporating body armor. Guns are still a long way off as the current school administrators want to avoid that kind of image, but we are debating over whether or not we should have light ballistic vests to wear under our uniforms. We have a small campus near a decent-sized city and have maybe 5-6 violent incidents per year.

Thanks for any help/advice/comments. I would especially hearing about other colleges where they don't carry firearms but wear bullet proof vests.

  1. I work security and carry intermediate weapons. I think body armour is a good idea. I am currently interviewing for law enforcement jobs and would always wear a vest.

  2. There are actually a vast number of universities that are now protecting their security people with body armor. Only a select group of the security people on campuses can carry guns. They now have to be POST certified to carry a gun and only the campus police can do that. Many of the departments however are also hiring security forces that are not armed with guns but do have mace, tazers and even billy clubs. They can do some damage but generally are not allowed to carry guns. They do however carry those cool little radios that bring tons of guns in a matter of minutes.

  3. Just because you don't have a weapon is no reason for you not to protect your self! Chicago is a prime example of banning guns and only criminals will have them!!! Better safe than sorry or dead!!!

  4. Now a days I would do no Security with out a gun...s***w the image what about your life think about it we want you to handle  this crazy person killing people on campus oh by the way hes got an AK and is coming here now the police are busy fighting traffic they will be delayed  so hold them off until then so here is your body armer oc and a 36inch batton oh and cuffs too  ...remember when seconds count the police are just minutes away....

  5. Body armor is always a good idea, armed or not.  It's also perfectly legal (armor does not kill people, after all).  It is kind of expensive, but worth it.  On campus, it would be a good idea to have at least stab-resistant vests, or bullet-resistant with stab resistance added, as knives are going to be far more common.

  6. Get a stab resistant one....you are more likely to get stabbed
