Question:

Unbuilt Kit Cars.?

I'm looking for a kit car- the kind you build and drive, often with a replicated car in modernized technology, and I'd like an unbuilt one, so I can learn more about the car and get a nice summer project. Most of the sites I've found are just prebuilt cars for sale out of kits, and I don't want that. I'm in the New Haven, CT area, if there's anyone with these cars for sale or a dealer.

  1. There are a lot of kit car makers out there - Factory 5, Superformance just to name 2

This is a VERY steep hill if you are just learning about cars.  And, its more than a summer project.  Kit Cars come with about 75% of the things you need to make a car.  You still need to supply engine, frame, transmission, differential, and many small parts.

They do not just bolt together either.  You need to actually build the suspension.  Parts often need to be modified or adapted - even the ones they send.  Body panels need to be honed and aligned before fitting to frame.

If you are trying to learn about cars, this is not a smart move.  PLus, its a very expensive move.

Your best bet to learn and have fun this summer is to get a beater car - something that may not be terribly desirable so y ou can get it cheap.  Then buy the shop manuals for that car, and set about repairing and rebuilding it.  You will have just as much fun, probably more, and actually learn more than trying to assemble a kit as a novice.

    Good luck

  2. I once built a kit car out of California, with the able help of two mechanically inclined friends...it was a real project!  Trust me, you really don't want to tackle that much of a job. And... I was a car dealer at the time!
