Uncertainty surrounds Derek Jeter's return to the New York Yankees line-up – MLB News
Uncertainty and hopes continue to surround Derek Jeter’s early return. On Sunday, there were reports that the New York Yankees’ Jeter, had gradually progressed in rehabilitation amid the hopes he would appear in this week’s game.
Jeter has reportedly taken 27 swings off a tee followed by another 30 in Tampa during a soft-toss session.
“There’s a chance today — he’s probably going through it right now — to do some more functional stuff,” Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman said. “He hasn’t really done anything. He’s been getting treatment, he’s felt the calf still.”
What remains worrying is the inability of the hitter to run despite the reports of quick rehabilitations as the team manager said, “He hasn’t been able to run the bases or do any defensive work or tee work or batting practice stuff.”
For the fifth consecutive day Jeter has played catch, he has not run owing to the complexities his calf injury involves.
The fear that made rounds on Sunday was that the expected date of Jeter’s return is effectively “in jeopardy” now given the fact that he has not worked on his calf to test it. However, hopes also surface.
Girardi, the Yankees’ team manager, hopes it would not be long before he made a return and commenced his baseball activity.
Jeter found himself occupied in the disabled list on the 14th of this month because of strained right calf. His unexpected injury raised alarm bells and a tinge of disappointment owing to the record he was set to make.
Derek, who has hit 2994 hits, is short of six hits to become baseball’s 28th hitter to have gone beyond 3000 hits, something rare and highly revered in the game.
Whatever came to pass, it’s not something easy that the team as a whole could reconcile with. As his 3000th hit faces delay, he, his team-mates, the team management and the team as a whole hold their breath and keep their fingers crossed for his
early return.
Jeter has barely been confined to disabled list for over 15 days. He is said to be a kind of player who, even if he gets unfit, recovers miraculously faster and adorns the team with his conspicuous presence.
However, this time – since 2003 when he seemed to remain on the disabled list for an eternity, over 15 days, Derek Jeter is once again toiling to recover so as to empower the team in their pursuit to remain at the top.
As it has been ruled out that Jeter would play on Wednesday, the hopes still persist that he would make it sooner. The Yankees are looking forward to Jeter’s return to the line-up, as his presence on the field is a source of motivation to the other players.
