Unchanged route for Milan San Remo 2013
Route for the 2013 Milan-San Remo remains unchanged as revealed by the race organiser, RCS Sport earlier.
The traditional 298 kilometre route will feature the 2013 version of the race ending on the climbs of Cipressa and Poggio however; adding extra ascends to make the race more interesting is still under consideration.
The Technical Manager for all of RCS Sport races said in a recent interview on Radio Manà Manà Sport that the route for the race next year will remain the same but slight changes can be expected.
"Next year's route won't change. Because if we did make changes, we'd want to announce well in advance,” he noted.
"By studying changes, we're not saying that the winners of the last year years aren't great riders but simply because when riders try to attack on the Poggio their efforts are often in vain because of the distance between the summit of the climb and the
finish”.
“We're trying to understand how we can change the route to give the riders who attack on the Cipressa and the Poggio a better chance of victory," Vegni said.
Milan-San Remo often termed as ‘the Spring classic’ in its native Italian language, is the largest one-day race held every year between Milan and Sanremo.
Lucien Petit-Breton succeeded during the first ever event of the race back in 1907 while Simon Gerrans of Team Orica-GreenEdge succeeded during the most recent version of the race in 2012 after overcoming Fabian Cancellara and Vincenzo Nibali.
Belgian cycling sensation, Eddy Merckx holds the honour of winning the event for a maximum number of seven times during his superb performances in 1966, 67, 69, 71, 72, 75 and 76 events of the race.
Erik Zabel claimed the second most victories at the race with his successive wins during the 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001 editions whereas, Oscar Freire holds the third position in terms of most victories at the Milan-San Remo (2004, 2007 and 2010).
The race is one of the ‘Monuments’ of the European cycling and is categorized as a UCI World Tour race since 2007.
Simon Gerrans is all set to defend his title in the season ahead but he will stiff challenge from various top cyclists around the globe at the Milan-San Remo 2013.
