The British Academy Video Game Awards nominees for the year have been announced and a number of games have made the cut.
Apart from awarding the best in film and television, the British Academy has become one of the first mainstream, established award institutions to recognise video games as well.
Judging from their nominations for the Game of the Year award, it seems they know what they’re talking about.
The PlayStation 3 exclusive blockbuster, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, is among the 10 games to be nominated for the prestigious award. The third game in the series saw the protagonist Nathan Drake travel all over the world in search of the mythical Atlantis of the Sands.
Another game that has been shortlisted is Valve’s follow up to the original cult classic, Portal 2. The game introduced a cooperative dynamic to the gameplay and it became an instant hit among the gaming masses and critics alike.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is another strong contender to bad the prize, as the game has received nothing but praise from every corner of the gaming community. However, the fact that its PlayStation 3 version has a load of issues may just dent its hopes, though not by much.
FIFA 12, EA’s bestselling sports game of all time, also makes the chart and is the only sports title on offer.
Minecraft, which is a game that has become a part of modern pop culture, is also amongst the nominees, as is the Nintendo exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
L.A. Noire and Batman Arkham City also make the cut as both titles were outstanding, though the fact that the former is slightly older, in terms of time spent in the market, means that it is unlikely it will win.
Finally, the two powerhouses of the first-person shooter genre, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 managed to earn themselves a spot in the list of nominations as well.
All in all, it seems a collection of great games, however one has to wonder why EA’s survival horror title, Dead Space 2 is not among the names up for contention.
