Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception AI is alive, no scripts for bad guys
The developers of the upcoming action/adventure game, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, have revealed that the enemy AI in the game will be completely unscripted. Naught Dog raised the bar in both production values and technical achievement with their previous
title, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
When Uncharted 3 was announced earlier this year, many fans were so excited they needed a change of pants, while at the same time there were concerns whether developers were rushing into the next game.
Uncharted 3, however, looks anything but a money-earning re-packing of its predecessor as it has a host of new features which look set to enhance gameplay. From context based combat moves to a revamped brawl styled hand-to-hand combat system, as well as
environments that change around the player, the game had enough to convince everyone.
So, it will come as a surprise to everyone when an interview with the developers revealed another new feature which players would get to see in the latest instalment of the game: unscripted AI.
The following statement was taken from the interview with the Guardian newspaper which read, “Yes, the enemy AIs have a set of riles that they wish to operate by. They have a hierarchical set of goals, they’ll analyse the terrain and make different choices
each time about how to approach the player character.”
The statement continued, “It took a lot of work, we to had to disassemble the whole AI system – before, it was much more scripted, we’d tell the enemies explicitly, go over here, flank the player...now they have a choice.”
Apart from providing everyone with evidence that robots are going to take over the world in the future with programming just like the one Naughty Dog have developed, it also should excite gamers as the action in Uncharted 2 would get slightly repetitive
once a player learned the enemies movements.
This time around, however, gamers can expect a dynamic combat experience which should do wonders for the game. Uncharted 3 is set for a release on November 1 in United States and is set to hit United Kingdom the next day, on November 2.
