Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and the Bourne Conspiracy: hand-to-hand combat done right
It is not uncommon for games to be compared to one another in the world of video games, take how everyone compares every first-person shooter to Call of Duty as an example, yet every now and again there are certain comparisons that surprise even the most
seasoned analysts.
One such comparison, which many, many gamers may not be able to make, is how the contextual hand-to-hand combat system of Naughty Dog’s latest entry in the Uncharted series, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, is similar to that of an older game, the Bourne
Conspiracy.
Released in 2008, the Bourne Conspiracy was a game that not many have played, but one that will be remembered with fondness by those who have.
The game matched the pace of the movies blow-by-blow, with a similar soundtrack, intense action and some up close and personal hand-to-hand fight sequences.
The mini-boss battles that took place were a treat and taking people down with the ‘brutal’ takedowns in the game was always enjoyable and never failed to induce a jaw dropping moment.
So when we first got our hands on a copy of the latest PlayStation 3 exclusive title, Uncharted 3, and saw that a similar contextual combat system had been added, it not only brought a nostalgic smile on our faces but also a level of excitement as we wanted
to see if Naughty Dog could do any better than Sierra Entertainment had done all those years ago.
Let us be clear here, we are not slating Naughty Dog for using similar mechanics as the Bourne Conspiracy neither are we implying that Uncharted 3 copied anything. We are simply saying that the hand to hand combat in Uncharted 3 reminded us of the Bourne
Conspiracy and we liked it.
In fact, contextual combat in Uncharted 3 has its own feel and style to it, which sets it apart from the other game. It feels more brutal, seamless and refined as compared to the animated feel the Bourne game offered.
That is where the comparisons between the two games stop, yet it was a surprisingly pleasant experience when we first got to grips with the hand-to-hand combat of the Bourne game and Uncharted took that to the next level.
The environment takedowns in the game based on Robert Ludlum’s books may have had more significance about them, seeing how combat focused on each enemy while Uncharted let players fight with who they wanted and when they wanted. Yet, once again the former
had a rather linear and often scripted combat mechanic while the latter has more of a free flowing feel about it.
There has been no news of Sierra Entertainment or High Moon Studios coming out with another game based on the Bourne series, with the Bourne Conspiracy based around the events of the first book/film.
While many wonder if why the game is not coming out or announced at the very least, the answer is simple. The game did not sell as well as many would have hoped and the reviews were not the most flattering either.
The fact of the matter is that it was a game where only the fans of the universe and a few gamers who did not mind a less than perfect game could enjoy.
