Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception has pushed the PlayStation 3 close to its limit
Naughty Dog have announced that the studio are nearing the limit of the PlayStation 3’s power with their third instalment in the Uncharted series, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and that gamers will have to wait till the next generation of consoles to see
another leap in terms of graphics.
The studio was praised for its improvements both in terms of its technical design and graphics between the first game and its award winning sequel. However, it seems that Naughty Dog is preparing the gaming community not to expect the same level of improvement
the third time around.
Speaking on behalf of Naughty Dog, Justin Richmond, Uncharted 3’s Game Director, explained, “that huge gap you saw between Uncharted 1 and 2 is the kind of thing that really only happens once per generation.”
However, he was also quick to ward off any speculation from the public and the media that the third instalment was just an update, rather than a full on new game experience. “Uncharted 3 isn’t just an incremental update. We did change lots and lots of things
– but graphically speaking, it’s not going to have the same gap (as the first two games). It was never going to happen.”
Of course, no explanation would be complete without the typical analogy thrown in and Justin Richmond dove right into it, “We pushed it really hard. Uncharted 2 to 3 is still a jump, but it’s a narrower jump.”
The developer also explained that the reason for the decrease in the rate of improvement was because of the limits of the PlayStation 3 and he conceded that another Uncharted game on the console would be more of an optimization as opposed to another ‘leap’
like the one between the previous two days.
“But I don’t think you’ll ever see that same jump again, at least on a PlayStation 3. There was just so much power left over in the PS3 when we made Uncharted 1 that we figured out how use and really took it to town when developing Uncharted 2.”
Things are already looking bright for Uncharted 3 as the multiplayer beta managed to break the record for most people who participated on beta on Sony’s online network, with the figure surpassing 1-million users.
However, Naughty Dog have found the extra attention to have a bit of a downside as review site gave away the ending to the single player experience of the game, something the studio did not take too well to.
Gamers can find out for themselves if Drake’s Deception can emulate its benchmark raising predecessor when it releases on the 1st of November.
