Uncle Mo associated with distance limitation ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, only time will tell if he can answer his critics with a win or not
The 5 to 2 morning line favourite Uncle Mo for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, got the nod over the likes of the European invader So You Think his own stable mate Stay Thirsty, the filly who defeated colts and geldings Havre de Grace and the Belmont Stakes winner
Ruler on Ice.
Since coming back from his spring illness, the question still looms large whether Uncle Mo can go and top the distance of 1 1/4 miles in the Classic when he had never run over that kind of distance, especially when he is coming off a second place finish
in a seven furlong dash and a win in a mile long race.
The same question was asked of owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher at a press conference featuring connections of some of the top horses racing in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
The two were asked of the possible distance limitations of the 3-year-old Classic favourite. The reason why the question is being thrown at Uncle Mo’s connections at ever press conference because of his recent workouts which have drawn scrutiny.
Todd Pletcher admitted his concerns by saying that he gets scared when Uncle Mo works, he said he got concerned when he went four furlongs in a fast 46 2/5 seconds when he trained leading up to the Kelso.
Pletcher made a logical statement that they can’t go on and look at other people and their horses and on top of that their work out routines, he said that they have to stick to their own routine which has worked for them throughout the year.
That’s what they are aiming to do for one of Uncle Mo’s biggest races, the distance sure is a marathon like one, but Uncle Mo’s last race Grade 2 Kelso Handicap was at a mile, and if anyone had watched him go they would have been certain that Uncle Mo could
go another mile at the same pace.
His pedigree indicates that Uncle Mo’s sire Indian Charlie had the distance in him and he could go long and a strong dose of stamina comes from his dam’s side which is what Uncle Mo needs to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic on 5 November.
