Uncle Mo retired to stud at Ashford Stud with the announced fee of $35,000
Last year’s 2-year-old champion Uncle Mo who was expected to do well in the year 2011 after his heroics last year was unfortunate to miss out the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby due to a liver ailment, and now after his unplaced finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic
on 5 November, 2011, at Churchill Downs, the son of Indian Charlie has been retired.
The 3-year-old Mike Repole owned colt, Uncle Mo had an enzyme problem which led to cholangiohepatitis, and right after the Classic Uncle Mo’s blood tests revealed that the gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) enzyme was elevated, hence they had to retire the
2-year-old champion.
It was the liver problem in spring which forced Uncle Mo to miss the Triple Crown this year, though the colt is not suffering from the disease currently, but the dangers of it getting serious if they run his has prompted connections to send Uncle Mo to Ashford
Stud, Kentucky where he will enter stud next year.
The Grade 1 winners’ fee was announced yesterday, Uncle Mo will stand for $35,000 and he will be joined by another top runner Cape Blanco who will also stand at Ashford Stud $17,500 in 2012.
Uncle Mo during his career was able to capture five races out of eight starts, and his winnings included Grade 1 Champagne Stakes and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as a 2-year-old.
In his 3-year-old career, Uncle Mo went on to land the Timely Writer Stakes and the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap on Belmont’s inner turf course.
Uncle Mo finished on the money twice, when he first finished third in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct, and then after recovering from his injury he finished second in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes.
The son of Indian Charlie, out of mare Playa Maya by Arch, Uncle Mo managed career earnings of $$1,606,000 and he was trained by Todd Pletcher.
Uncle Mo was an instant hit when he won by a massive margin of 14 ¼ lengths in his first start and recording a Beyer Speed Figure of 102. John Velazquez rode Uncle Mo throughout his career.
