Question:

Uncle trouble?

My great uncle Maldwin insists on wearing his horrid T Shirt that has a picture of a Corned Beef Sandwich printed onto it, down at the beach during our holiday. Owing to his advanced years he has become very stubborn about this even though he seems to be the centre of ridicule from other bathers.

Question is, is there at all a way of making him change his mind and his attire?

Pete.

  1. No, if he likes the shirt, you should't make him change. He doesn't seem to mind the ridicule. If you are embarassed, just play in the ocean!

  2. He's old. Let him be! :) Who cares what others think??

  3. I have a hard time believing that an old man in a sandwich t-shirt could be ridiculed more than maybe a few smiles.  This must be an exclusive, we're better than everyone, we weren't raised well, beach.

  4. You shouldn't be embarrassed on this account.  He was either oblivious of how he looked in which case it didn't matter or he was attention seeking. If it was the latter let  him have his moments of glory. Lets be honest he was on the beach and you certainly see some sights there.  I know I would rather look at a T Shirt with a corned beef sandwich, covering an aging body than some of the older men in their little 'poser pants' with the beer belly hanging over, or even hanging so low that it actually covers the trunks.

  5. Nah, its just a t-shirt.  I doubt anybody else really notices!

  6. I want a shirt like that! I love random shirts. I bet he looks cool. If I saw him at the beach with a tee shirt with a corned beef sandwich I would think: That is s cool old man. Whats the big deal?

  7. you imagine others are looking and laughing , just because you do not like the t-shirt. leave him alone and concern your self with things that matter

  8. Awwwwwww........Let your uncle wear what he wants, and don't get embassed by it. there are worse things happening.

  9. Relatives huh!...they can put you to shame old boy, one must ask the question...I presume he is wearing shorts as well as the horrid t.shirt......

I fear that when one becomes old there are not very many things that you can get your own way on.  Hanging on to this t.shirt could be a metephor for hanging on...if you know what I mean.

One good thing is that at least the picture is of corned beef, could be much worse my great aunt Hilda has a cardigan with a large knitted picture of SPAM, well...say no more.

  10. You are a so conservative!. One of the few pleasures of growing old is caring less about what people think. Have you heard of the poem "Wearing Purple" by Jenny Joseph?

"When I am old  I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go..." .Look it up.

Then go give uncle Maldwin-(is that his real name,? You have to be unconventional with a name like that) a big hug. He's not going to be around for ever.

You are just having a laugh Pete aren't you. Maldwin, that's great!

  11. nahh, I'd leave it, just wear a shirt that he hates, and try for a deal as a laugh lol. If not, just leave him =p

  12. I like your style.

    You're a blessing, son.

  13. Depants him on the beach, and tell him you'll keep doing so until he de-shirts instead.  If he wont, well, then he'll likely be hauled off to the nick anyway for indecent exposure, so you win either way.

  14. 20 years from now when he is gone you'll look back on these memories with fondness.  It will be funny then.

Let him do what he wants.  Enjoy his company and make the most of your holiday.

  15. I can understand and agree with your feelings. It would embarrass me. However, I think the more attention (good or bad) from wearing it, just makes him want to wear it more often.

It sounds like he is a bit stubborn and doing it more to aggravate his family than for any other reason. I guess you will just have to ignore him. I an sure if you say anything to him, it will only make the situation worse.

You could get the shirt and burn it when he is not around. Just do not let anyone know he is kin to you..lol   :)
