Undefeated Shanghai Bobby pointed toward Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Todd Pletcher will be eager to sort out In Lingerie’s Breeders’ Cup race, which is still in limbo according to Eclipse Thoroughbred president Aron Wellman, but Pletcher will be pleased to know that his other trainee, Shanghai Bobby, Starlight Racing’s 2-year-old undefeated colt has been confirmed to run in the Grade 1 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on 3 November, 2012, at Santa Anita Park.
It was revealed and confirmed by Starlight Racing managing partner, Jack Wolf on 8 October. It shouldn’t have been a difficult decision for either owner or multiple Eclipse Award winning trainer, Todd Pletcher, whose trainee has not lost a single race he has been a part of.
"Todd and I discussed our options this morning," Wolf said. "The colt came out of the race in great shape and has given us every indication that he belongs. He's done everything that's been asked of him and more. We are very excited for our partners and team and feel fortunate to have such a talented colt headed to the World Championships."
Bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings, Shanghai Bobby is undefeated in four races in as many starts, and he has already become a Grade 2 and a Grade 1 winner.
Harlan’s Holiday’s juvenile colt was exposed to racing on 19 April, 2012, and the runner broke his maiden at first asking going 4 ½ furlongs over Aqueduct’s dirt track.
Todd Pletcher realizing potential, entered Shanghai Bobby in an overnight stakes race, the Track Barron Stakes at Belmont Park, and stepped up him distance to 5 ½ furlongs.
Shanghai Bobby turned in another race easily, and moved on to his first real challenge among his own class, when he entered the Grade 2 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga over seven furlongs.
On 3 September, 2012, Shanghai Bobby defeated Fortify in second and Bern Identity in third to cover the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 22.72 seconds.
It was time to go up to a mile for Shanghai Bobby, and Todd Pletcher found a Grade 1 race suitable for the colt to run in, and with the speedy colt Goldencents in the lineup, the race was always going to be an intriguing one.
However, Shanghai Bobby did what he had been doing best in his short career, and he cast Goldencents in second to win the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park.
