Undefeated The Lumber Guy pointed toward the Wood Memorial
Barry Schwartz’s The Lumber Guy incurred an injury when he raced to victory in the Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park, as he came out of the race with a grabbed quarter on his left front hoof, but all seemed to be going in his favour as the 3-year-old Michael
Hushion colt outfitted a patch for his quarter crack and turned in a blazing work for his next start in the Grade 1, $1 million Resorts World Casino Wood Memorial at Aqueduct race course’s dirt track over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on 7 April, 2012.
The New York bred son of Grand Slam, out of mare Boltono by Unbridled’s Song, The Lumber Guy is still undefeated in 2 career starts. First one was his maiden special weight race that he won at first asking AT Aqueduct race course over a distance of six furlongs
on 28 January, 2012.
His second win was a stakes race, the Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park, where he was slightly stretched out in distance from 6 furlongs to 7 furlongs, but it was much to slow him down, as he downed, Brimstone Island, by 4 ¼ lengths on 25 February, 2012,
as he topped the 7 furlong distance in 1 minute and 23.22 seconds.
The Lumber Guy will be going against the likes of Kiaran McLaughlin’s, Alpha in the race, who will probably head the field after the draws for the race, and on top of that he will be massively stretched out in distance to 1 1/8 miles.
He has been preparing well for the race as he turned in five furlongs in 1 minute and 1 3/5 seconds at Belmont Park’s training track.
“He had a little glitch, but he’s back on schedule, and right now, we’re going to give (the Wood) a try,” said Hushion.

“I’d rather take a mini-step first time two turns, but we’re talking about the Wood so sometimes you do things you wouldn’t ordinarily do,” said Hushion. “His race in Maryland was pretty straightforward. He came out of the gate, stumbled, took off, and said
goodbye.”
