Under 19 Glory and the ‘Masala’ of Indian Cricket - Part 1 - Opinion
Yet another piece of silverware came the way of a young, passionate, zealous and eccentric Indian side, which managed to win the under 19 Cricket World Cup for the third time. Scenes of jubilation followed an emphatic victory for India over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 Stadium in Townsville. The triumph seemed strangely inevitable, as an array of top quality players managed to secure a memorable moment in Indian cricket, bringing back vague flashbacks of their 2008 World Cup triumph. For the future of Indian cricket, this World Cup victory meant far more for the group of 11 players, than just securing a trophy.
It is perhaps noteworthy, that India’s Under 19 legacy has been phenomenal to say the least. Even more noteworthy is the fact that Indian players who have emerged from the Under 19 set up have gone on to become star performers for their country. Virat Kohli is the most obvious example of a magnificent Indian player who rose through the ranks after captaining his side at the Under 19 level and helping them retain some well deserved glory. Some of them have gone on to become legends who have contributed significantly towards India’s rise from a mediocre outfit to a force in the world that had to be reckoned with.
Yet, it is safe to say that India’s performance in the recently concluded Under 19 Cricket World Cup in Australia has been dominated by a few players, with significant strides. The most significant contributor has been their captain, Unmukt Chand. Fiercely competitive, agile and boasting an array of top quality strokes is the best way to describe Chand, who in a short space of time, was already dubbed as the future of Indian cricket. Chand had played an astonishing inning in the final, which was reminiscent of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Malaysia-c2949. His thunderous 111 in the final, which included seven boundaries and six magnificent sixes, sent down damning signs for the Australians who were well and truly dethroned. It was a satisfying feeling for the Indians as they became undisputed champions of the game and Chand was hailed as the next ‘big’ thing in Indian cricket even prior to this tournament. Yet there was more. India had unveiled an impressive set of other young players, who are bound to aid the national side through an exhibition of fine skills.
As far as Unmukt Chand is concerned, it is safe to say that his performance is reminiscent of Virat Kohli. His batting style oozes class and any astute observer who watched him bat in that all important World Cup final would have noticed that his array of top quality strokes was not unlike Virat Kohli in his young days. His ruthlessness was typical of the modern day Indian cricketer, who is expected to combine flare with pugnacity and tenacity on the field.
