Under-23 European Championship concludes in Kazan: Fencing News
The last day of the Under-23 Kazan European Fencing Championship was brought to a close with three team events namely Women's epee, Men's sabre and Men's foil that took place at the Wrestling Palace, Ak Bars, in the Russian state, Tatarstan’s capital, Kazan,
yesterday, on May 31.
Kazan has been having many fencing competitions being hosted in the city, but it was the first Under-23 European being held there, this year.
The fifth day was also conquered by the host team, Russia with two gold medals of the day. In Women’s epee team competition, a total of seven teams took part.
In the quarter-finals, Estonia, Italy and Russia qualified into the next round after beating down Sweden, Hungary and Germany, respectively. However, during the semi-finals, Poland outplayed Estonia with an obvious 45-36 win, whereas Russia gave an enormous
defeat to the Italian team at 45-18.
The final bout was a head-to-head at 33-33, when Russia broke the score-lock with the gold-winning hit at 34-33. On the other hand, Italy defeated Estonia in the play-off with a close 43-42 score win.
In the second competition of the day, Men’s Sabre team, the Russians conquered the piste with a direct entry into the semi-finals, where they defeated the Polish team with 45-37, making it into the finals.
In this round, they met the team Belarus that were easily trounced with a 45-31, clinching their second gold of the day.
The third and last competition of the championship was the Men’s Foil team event, in which seven teams took part. The host team defeated Germany in the semi-final bout by 45-32 and progressed into the finals.
It was expected that the team had almost nailed their mark by taking the top-podium spot like the previous day, however, the Russian team was unfortunately beaten down by the Italian foilists with a clear 45-35 score loss.
At the end of the competition, Russia still had a reason to celebrate, being the top ranked team of the Under-23 European championship. They sealed total nine of the twelve gold medals of the event.
