Question:

Under Armour... heat gear or cold gear?

This may seem like a silly question. But I have a short-sleeved shirt from Under Armour and its made of mostly cationic polyester, and some elastane. It doesn't say if it is Heat Gear or Cool Gear on the shirt, and I don't remember which it was as I bought it a while ago and never wore it.

I'm planning on wearing it to go running outdoors in the summer and want to know if that's safe. I'm assuming it is because its short-sleeved, but I just don't know.

So... which do I have? And what is the difference between Heat Gear and Cool Gear?

  1. Both HeatGear and ColdGear are moisture wicking. I believe ColdGear has an inner layer that traps heat in addition.

The shirt is almost certainly HeatGear. Under Armour shows no short-sleeve ColdGear on their website, and most of the ColdGear have some form of "extension" at the neck for additional heat retention.

If in doubt, you can wear the shirt around the house for a bit. If it seems like it's insulating and trapping heat -- which it shouldn't -- then it might bizarrely be ColdGear. Do beware that if you've washed/dried moisture wicking fabric with fabric softener, you can (temporarily) interfere with moisture wicking ability so it could seem to trap heat that way even if it's HeatGear....

  2. Heat gear.  I can not imaging anyone running in the winter with a short sleeve shirt

  3. Funny- I just had this conversation last week. I don't think it really matters since either one will wick away moisture! That's the top priority of both types of gear! Personally, I just wear Under Armour and don't look for tags since I own both types- whatever is comfortable!

  4. Under Armour does not make short-sleeved cold gear, so it's heat gear.

  5. I have never been able to tell the difference between the two. If you pick it up and it feels too heavy, it will be very uncomfortable once you start running outside in it. I wouldn't wear black on a really sunny day, unless it's in the morning or the evening. Try a cotton shirt in the middle of the day, you will feel a lot more comfortable. Hope this helps :)
