Under gravel filter for goldfish? ?

Somebody said an under gravel filter is not right for a goldfish. Can I use and under gravel filter on the goldfish?

  1. Yes, you can.  Just make sure you give it a couple weeks to cycle and don't vacuum all the gravel at once.  That advice would go for any use of an under gravel filter.  Also, goldfish aren't tropicals, so their colder water will result in slower biochemical reaction times.  That means the carrying capacity of the filter will be lower than it would for a tropical tank (by about a half).

  3. Goldfish need a very good filter that hangs over the side or that is a canister filter. If you already have one of those for your goldfishes large tank, yes an under gravel filter could work. Since there are no cold water snails I have heard of, it is hard to keep the gravel clean between water changes, so and under gravel filter will help keep gunk out of the gravel.

  4. Goldfish produce such a huge amount of waste that an undergravel filter isn't really effective.  You could use one with a hang on type as an extra but I wouldn't count on it as your main means of filtration.
