  2. A caution stays on your record for 5 years unless it occurred before you were 18, where they are generally wiped.

    A conviction stays on your record for life, but after the end of the rehabilitation period associated with that conviction, you no longer have to disclose that conviction under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974). How long the rehabilitation period lasts differs depending on the tariff set by the inherent powers of a criminal court under the various Acts on criminal court sentencing.

    Some crimes, such as murder, release prisoners on licence for life which is excepted from the aforementioned provisions.

    There are certain cases where it is unlawful to not disclose spent convictions - you are generally notified on application forms where this is the case. For example, an individual with a criminal conviction cannot join the Police and or become a solicitor.

    If you are unsure you can contact the Criminal Records Bureau or your local Citizens Advice Bureau - you can visit or by phone.

  3. For life.

    Spent = 5 years.

  4. On your record for life, spent after 5 years
