I'm buying a car(cougar) from my sister, i'm 17 so i can't really get my own insurance policy. My mom keeps trying to get me to put the car in her name, she has an odd tendency to steal these kinds of things from her kids. I need to know, she uses aarp, for me to be added to her policy does my car need to be in her name?

  1. Yes, if the car is registered in your name then you have to have a separate policy. For the time being I think the only thing you can do is register it under her name. She can "sell" it to you when you turn 18 so that you can register it under your insurance policy.

  2. dude that's your mom,,,how can you say that?

  3. No, the car doesn't have to be in her name. She just needs to add the car to her policy under your name. But let her steal your car. She's your mom and she's old. Give her a break. Once you are 18 you can go and get a new care and your own insurance.

Or, you can sell your mom your car for $1 with an option to buy it back for $100 when you turn 18 until you turn 19.

  4. Until you reach the age of majority, your parents own all your property anyways.  It varies from state to state.  Here in Alabama the age of majority is 19 unless you get married or divorced from your parents.  In other words, it is her car.  Just do it and get the insurance.  If she takes the car from you shame on her, but what can you do?  You can sue her and you might win, but it would be a challenge.

Either that, or wait until majority or get married.

  5. why is it you can't get your own insurance??  If you able to pay for it, your able to have it.

  6. No your car doesn't have to be in her name, when I was 17 I payed for and owned my own car, it was registered in my name and no one elses but I had to be put on my mom's insurance policy until I turned 18 b/c I was a minor. So it'll be the same more than likely for you.

  7. The car has to be in her name. Otherwise AARP won't insure it.
