I need to pay for school. I already have gone through FAFSA and am already getting the pell grant and stafford loan. I still have $6,000 to go. I have very good grades and get all sorts of awards. I have a disability and am was adopted and brought to this country as a small baby. is there any way to pay for college that isn't a total scam. and yes i do plan on getting a job once i move to the location of the school, but since i haven't been making money I need a cosigner for the loans and I don't have one. Any ideas?

  1. Several states have educational grants available to families who adopt. One example is Connecticut, which provides educational assistance to any child who was adopted through the State's foster care program. That particular program is so generous that the student's family only needs to contribute $500 a year to the cost of education.

You didn't indicate where you're from, and whether your adoption was arranged through a state agency - however, if that was the case, you should definitely check with whatever your state's equivalent of the Department of Children and Families is.

I'm linking to a site that lists certain scholarship funds that are available to foster children. I'm wondering, since you mentioned having been adopted from overseas (?), if you would qualify for any of these programs, but they're worth a look.

Otherwise, with your good grades, you should definitely be competitive for any general scholarship funds that are available. The major challenge in gaining scholarship assistance is the hunt. I would strongly recommend that you not pay one of these scholarship services, but if you're at all handy with internet searching, you should be able to find thousands of scholarships that you can apply for.

You'll get the usual recommendation of fastweb.com, but I'd also recommend that you try the US Department of Education's scholarship search wizard, as well. I've linked to that site, too.

I hope this information helps you - good luck!
