Understanding angles?

can someone explain the angles in pool for me? so far im thinking of looking at a straight path between the ball and the target pocket and just hit the cue ball wherever that spot is from that straight path. Is this the right way of thinking? It hasn't really worked for me so far, but that might be because I'm a new player and I'm simply not hitting where I want to.

  1. You have to adjust because the balls are spherical.  Below is a good article explaining aiming.  Also, check out the second article and go to the second page to watch a video on it.

If you're a beginner, you do have to make sure that your stroke is ok and you're hitting the cue ball straight and where you want it to go.  Otherwise, you'll never be able to tell if it's your aim that's off or if it's your stroke.

  2. There are some good videos online  about this I suggest you look into them

  3. Experience and experiment will be what eventually cracks it for you, go to a bar or pool hall where there is no pressure and then you can experiment until your hearts content, try hitting the side of the ball as well for subtle changes to these angles, once you've started experimenting you'll never want to stop
