Please could you tell me how I understand my blood test results for my thyroid. It says T4 14 (10-25) and TSH 1.1 (0.30-5.50). I am so lethargic all the time and have gained loads of weight that I cant lose.

  1. I have exactly the same problem (the weight issue) and am waiting for my full thyroid tests results to come back (as well as diabetes and coeliac), last time my TSH levels were 0.72 and I also have a cyst on my thyroid.  Your results are definintely normal.

Go back to the doctor with a list of symptons and ask for a thorough examination and for them to take your symptons seriously.

Exercise does increase your energy levels, I guess it could be that you eat more calories than you expend, but it could be other things as well - its not always your fault!

  2. Just because those tests came back "within normal" ranges doesn't mean that your thyroid is OK.  First you have to determine what is "normal" for you!  Next, there are several "versions" of the T3 & T4 tests.  I have an underactive thyroid and some of my test have come back normal but I KNOW something isn't right so I'm going to make an appt with and Endocrinologist to get a better picture of things... I just know that something isn't right and I would encourage you to do the same.

Note to Dr Frank - GPs and other "PCPs" need to stop dismissing patient's issues/complaints/problems and if someone says that they need help - know when to refer them to a specialist.

  3. your results are within the normal range. you are ok.

  4. My thyroid results are much the same as you - I am now euthyroid (normal) after a couple of years being hyperthyroid (Graves Disease).

I lost a lot of weight whilst hyper and could eat anything I wanted and still lose weight.  Hence, once I was at normal levels the weight came on, due to my eating habits - so I had to change my eating habits and exercise more and hey presto - the weight is coming off nicely.

Your thyroid isn't underactive so this is not causing your weight gain.

Sorry, through my own personal experience, I have to agree with Dr Frank on this one.

Ps Eating too little can slow your metabolism right down and lead to difficulties with losing weight.

  5. Your thyroid function test are normal and therefore in no way explain your weight gain. Could it possibly be due to eating too much and exercising too little?
