  1. Naked Economics or Basic Economics

  2. Tim Harford's two books: "The Undercover Economist" and "The Logic of Life" are both winners.

For economics related to current events, I like Paul Krugman. I haven't read any of his books, just his columns in the New York Times, but his "International Economics: Theory and Policy" is supposed to be a textbook without calculus, and some his columns have been bound in "The Conscience of a Liberal" - though they are also available on-line:

For a bigger picture, I like both John Kenneth Galbraith and Jane Jacobs - both have written primarily for the lay audience.

Galbraith has written extensively, on a number of themes.

Jane Jacobs writes mostly about cities and their importance in economies: "Cities and the Wealth of nations", "The Economy of Cities", etc.

    Enjoy.
