Underwater swimming at the Olympics?

Supposedly it was an event in 1900, but it was dropped for a lack of "spectator appeal." You were awarded one point for every second you remained underwater, and two for every metre you swam.

I actually think it sounds like it would be a cool event to watch, especially with the popularity free diving and such. I'm sure there would be some athletes who could do something really impressive with it, too.

At any rate, do you think they should bring it back? Do you think anyone would watch it? Would it be too dangerous?

  1. I enjoy all the water sports - polo, diving, rowing, swimming....so I would watch it definitely.

  2. I dont think because they might burst their lung even if they have lifeguards watching them

  3. I think that it would be fun to watch. It sounds really interesting. I don't think they should bring it back however. It seems too dangerous. People these days are extremely competitive and would push themselves past their bodies limits to win. Someone would end up getting hurt.

  4. I think people would hurt themselves.  Not much sporting value to it.  Anyways there is a long process for a sport becoming an olympic event: for example, there must be a highly developed international circuit for competition, and sufficient competitors.  Seems kinda silly.

I LOL'd when I read your question though, just picturing a silent crowd until someone's head comes up, and then *ROAAAR*
