Question:

Underwear etiquette with a college roommate?

I'm going into my sophomore year of college this fall and I want to know what would be acceptable times to be in underwear in front of a roommate? I lucked out and didn't have one last year so I don't really know when it's ok haha. I usually sleep in my underwear at home (boxer-briefs), but I don't want to freak him out or make anyone uncomfortable or anything by just ripping my pajama pants and shirt off and start walking around in my skivvies lol

  1. You could ask your roommate if he would be comfortable/uncomfortable with you dressing like that around your dorm. It probably shouldn't be a problem, but that way you could avoid other issues later. It's better to know than to not.

  2. Tell him upright about this and see how he reacts. Compromise if he has an issue with it. Good luck!

  3. If you sleep in your underwear, I think it would be better if you wait until right before you get in bed to take off your clothes....that way you're not walking around in your underwear.  Wait and see what your roommate does as well....he might walk around your dorm room in his underwear all the time, not just at bedtime :)  Seriously though, you could ask him if it bothers him if you walk around in your underwear only.

  4. Guys are usually pretty cool about that unless you are always in your boxers, then that might be weird. Probably just a little before bed and after waking up, just so it's not uncomfortable. You could always ask too.

  5. The other answers I've seen are from girls.  From a guy's standpoint, there should be no problem.  I've never met a guy who cared.  I had never met my roommate before I moved in with him last year and we were often in only our boxers in an 11x14 dorm room.  Maybe if he's incredibly socially awkward he might care.  I say just go ahead and do it and if he looks uncomfortable, ask him politely if he minds.  If he does, switch to athletic shorts or something.  If he has a problem with you having your shirt off, he needs to just get over it.
