Question:

Underweight? Overweight?

Okay, so we all like to think that we know and can tell when a dog is over or underweight, but can you really? I've had animal control called on me twice because my dog is suppose to look skinny and neighbors were 'concerned'. So the truth is, can you really tell whether a dog is overweight, underweight, or normal? I have 9 pictures of the 3 categories, some of the dogs I know, others I don't. Can you decide which is which?

  1. 1 & 7 Underweight

    2 , 4 ,9 &  5 okay 6 a fantastic Dobermann

    8 & 3 Overweight

Dobes can't hide anything so it's easy to see what condition they are in.

  2. 1 - Underweight

2 - Looks spot on to me

    3 - Overweight

    4 - Underweight slightly

5 - Can't see enough as the dog is curled up, lightly showing ribs i don't see as a problem.

    6 - Perfect - What a great outline

    7  - Underweight

    8 - Overweight

    9 - Perfect

  3. If you can feel the ribs without having to do major surgery and the last rib shows when the dog is exerting himself, I am happy as far as the dog being lean!!

The Doberman looks good in the pic and so does the last dog in there!

  4. 1. underweight

    2. overweight (looked at pic anyway, does look slightly over weight)

    3. definitely overweight

    4. looks slightly underweight

    5. normal

    6. looks normal, but could be slightly over

    7. under

    8. overweight?  It's kinda hard to tell from the front, but definitely looks like it could drop a pound or two

    9. normal

  5. 1. Emaciated

    2.Perfect

    3.Extremely Overweight

    4. Normal for the breed

    5.Underweight

    6. Perfect

    7. Emaciated

    8. Overweight

    9. Perfect

  6. 1. Underweight

    2. Normal

    3. Overweight

    4. Underweight

    5. Underweight

    6. Normal

    7. Underweight

    8. Overweight

    9. Normal

Typically, if you can see more than 3 ribs, regardless of breed, it's underweight.  If the dog appears more round, rather than having the correct "curves" (indent at waist, when viewed from above, stomach indents under when appears from side) then it's considered overweight.

EDIT:  What breed is #4??  To me that looks horribly underweight :(  That breed is supposed to be that way huh?

  7. 1. is underwieght

    2. normal

    3. overweight

    4. normal for that breed

    5. hips seem to stick out a little so under

    6. normal

    7. under hips stick out

    8. over

    9 normal

if you can see a waste from looking above than the dogs is normal, if the dog has no waste it is overweight, some breeds tend to have some ribs showing, but usually the hips won't stick out, also if the dog appears undweight that usually come with some coat problems example: the coat isn't as healthy due to lack of nutrition.

EDIT: christen b that dog breed is an azawakh hound

  8. 2, 4, 5, 6 and 9 look great!

    1 & 7 are emaciated

3 and 8 are grossly overweight
