I plan on buying a telescope with a 10" aperture. What are the chances of discovering a new galaxy or anything else?

  1. Many comets and supernovae have been discovered with such a telescope.  Other objects, not so much.  Any object that is fixed, or moves very slowly on the sky (like a galaxy) will have been detected by full-sky optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

By the way, it's easy to discover new stuff in the Sloan Digital Sky survey.  All the data are available on line.

  2. I'd say chances are pretty good.  A 10" will allow you to see things in space with great detail.  You may even discover a new comet or asteroid.  Billions of galaxies out there and we have only seen a very small percentage of them.  Hope you enjoy your new telescope, which I'm sure you will.  Have fun!

  3. You will not be able to discover a galaxy, but if you try hard enough and long enough, you can discover some comets.

  4. Now a days sky is catlogued by auto matic telescopes by photography and most of the sky is covered in star maps.

But there are still chances for an amateur observor.Stars may become Nova and increase brightness.New comets comes  occassionally and you can look for them. Even a supernova  may be found by you.

But it requires very hard work, knowledge of the sky, very sharpemmory!

  5. You will.  there are so many.   Though the most obvious have been discovered.

  6. Everyone here is right, you will be able to find some new comets if even- supernovas. Unfortunately, you won't be able to see galaxies. A 10" is a great choice.

  7. Very good chance of finding a new comet or asteroid.  Finding a new galaxy with a scope that size is unlikely, but you might discover a new supernova.
