Question:

Uneven air conditioning

The upstairs of our home is on a single A/C zone. One end of the house, master bedroom, stays quite cool. The opposite end of the house, the office, is often 6-8 degrees warmer. We've tried closing the vents in the master bedroom but that doesn't seem to have much effect on the office.

The airflow coming through the vents in the master bedroom is very strong, but the flow in the office is almost undetectable. I've checked the conduit in the attic to see if the one going to the office is pinched or leaking but I can't find anything. What else can I do to get the office regulated about the same as the rest of the upstairs?

  1. The answer is not only cold air in the room but return air pulling heat out of the room, I bet the filter or return is near your master bedroom and the hot room has no return near it so the heat has no where to go. Look at the evap coil also to see how clean the coil is. For a good a/c system all rooms should have returns to remove heat from that space.

  2. Because it is so far from the main blower it gets less air.

You could add more ducts to the area if you have a space tp run more , but also you can have an in-line booster fan added to the run of duct to your office. it can be cut into the supply duct and wired to house voltage and to a thermostat and relay to bring it on when your room is warmer than the rest of the house .

  3. if you follow the duct from the office back to the plenum you will find they are not tapped on the end of plenum or worse right off the coil installers don't know about static pressure get an ac tech to redo your plenum and duct

  4. finally someone with some knowledge, you're right on the money a/c tech......   air conditioners DO NOT blow out cool air, they remove heat just the same as any refrigeration system

  5. Payjani above me is correct.Closing off the vents in other rooms is not the solution.Rex the air is very turbulant in the plenum or in the cheese boxes. It is bouncing and spinning around.

Where the duct happens to be located for the office is just in a dead spot ,where the air is not as stong and missing it as compared to the bedroom duct.

This duct will have to be relocated and the hole capped where it was.

With just a little bit of knowledge and know how you can relocate it yourself .It is not challenging at all.Experiment with it.It will work.

    Good luck.

  6. make sure that the air flow is working in the Master Bedroom and the Office at the same time, check out the the web site out and tell them what the problem is and maybe they can help you to restore the air flow evenly in the Master Bedroom and your Office.

  7. Closing the vents in the room will have no effect. You must reduce the flow at the trunkline or duct in the attic. If it was a good contractor, there should be dampers where the branch ducts join the main trunkline. Look for a small lever-type device at that location. It should be arranged similar to a water valve, ex., when the lever is inline with the duct, the vent is fully open. Lever perpendicular to duct, airflow is completely cut off. Reduce the flow to the bedroom to minimum, increase flow to office.

  8. my husband has been doing hvac for 35 years and i a m going to say either you have to big of a load on the   system ( How many square feet are you cooling does this problem also happen with the heating ?)

    OR

your trunk line , aka supply line is incorrectly sized , closing vents does not force air into another area or room. Is your supply line Flex Duct ( Flex duct looks like an aluminum foil tube) or is it metal? if it is metal is it insulated? Wrapped and sealed with mastic( Mastic is duct sealant and is white or a taupe color.

you could also put in what are called Zone dampers , they are NOT cheap but it allows you to control every single room individually.  if

you give me more details I can reply with a more definitive answer.

Also do you have 2 outside units or just one?  1 for upstairs and 1 for down. To me it sound like who ever did your install tried to rig it up and cold air only stays cold  for a small time frame and it can warm up if  they tried to force it to far. Perhaps your unit is undersized,  there are a lot of variables it is hard to guess with out actually seeing your particular situation,  NO I am not trying to sell you anything
