Relevent: I'm operating on a Vista home premium 32 bit,

i'm connecting my miniDV camcorder via a USB 2.0 device (equivalent to IEEE 1394) an using Roxio video importing software that definately identfies my device when i connect it

Probably irrelevent:

My camcorder is a JVC GR-D370U

My problem:

I start up the Roxio video import software and select my device for capture... that's as far as I get. My computer then shuts down suddenly and completely, dumping all physical memory immediatly. The same incident occurs when i tried to import miniDV footage using WMM (xp version) but since I was using it off of a thumb drive I didnt expect it to work. Anyway, I'm wondering if any1 has had any luck importing MiniDV footage on Vista. and if you have, what did you do differently? Firewire is a possible alternative for me if i NEED it, but I'd rather solve the problem without having to run out and buy a cable. Are there any free alternative programs I can download and use>?

  1. you my be running out of RAM.  How much is installed on your PC? If you  have room add  a couple of gig`s

  2. I use the built-in "Windows Import Video" in Vista that works like a champ.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV6.  And it works fine via firewire

It starts up when I connect the camera.

    The executable is:

    CaptureWizard.exe

    Under \program files\Movie Maker

    I am running Vista Enterprise

  3. And another one bites the dust..... Again you cannot import mini DV via USB. It has to be firewire!! There isn't any alternative or software!! Once you connect via firewire, Roxio should work for you. If it doesn't, then you need to make sure your camera has a compatable vista driver. Good luck!!
