Unfair, that middle class gets no help with government, or scholarships for college?

We are middle class folks, nothing special about us.

Live week by week on funds, ya know what I mean. Not low income enough to be awarded grants. Colleges dont recognize us as "financial need" basis for scholorships or work study programs. So we have to get personal school loans that my kids will pay off for years and years. How can we get some help. She has been applying for awards and etc. I hate to see her go 60k in debt just to go to college.

How do kids do it nowadays. We as parents cant really help her.

  1. If college were cheap and easy, everyone would go. You could always quit your jobs, give up your middle class lifestyle and I'm sure she would probably qualify for need-based financial aid after the next tax year. Have her look into community college for the first two years (usually it's less expensive and she can live at home which saves money), then she can transfer to a 4-year institution to finish. Many, many folks do this. As I've been told by financial planners and financial aid folks, it's not the government's fault nor is it the college's fault we didn't save for our son's college education or take advantage of pre-paid college plans, etc.

  2. You can have your kids to apply for merit based scholarships that Universities offer if your family isn't qualified for need based scholarships.

Also, College Universities aren't the only source for scholarships. You may want to visit this site if you want access to different kinds of scholarships

  3. You most certainly are not alone with this problem.

I don't know which country you are from, but the problem is universal.

Some colleges do have scholarships based on ability, the kids take an entrance exam to see how good they are. Many schools give the scholarships to those in your sort of situation as long as the exam results are good, but as I don't know your country, I can't help with the schools.

    Good luck.
